I was saddened to learn of the death of Robert Parker on Tuesday: http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/books/view.bg?articleid=1226710. He died working at his writing desk. That's the way to go. He was the author of the Spenser mystery novels and of a couple of other series and some western novels. I learned of him when the TV series Spenser: For Hire came on in the 80's. I had never been interested in reading mystery novels because I had seen too many people who got addicted to them. I guess I got addicted to Parker and later to Sara Paretsky and Walter Mosely. I guess I enjoyed Spenser because, in spite of the violence and profanity, he was faithful to his own set of values and he was never impressed by the pretentiousness of people who thought their money and power gave them privileges over other people.
